Genre

Media Theory: "genre is no longer a fixed set of elements"

Buckingham (1990): argues that genre is a "constant process of negotiation and change"

Genre is when a media text is constructed in a certain way, it also adopts the codes and conventions of other texts in that genre. Some text from different mediums may belong to the same genre (e.g. Doctor Who and The Incredible Hulk are both science fiction but both different.)

I have chosen the Indie genre as our chosen band is that as well as other genres (hybrid). The Indie genre started in around 1965 with The Byrds and The Velvet Underground being the first few bands. Then in 1968 The Stooges are signed to Elektra Records as well as MC5. In 1973 The New York Dolls play mock rock on television. 1981 Depache Mode take their baby steps, and in 1983 The Smiths made their first TOTP debut. In 1989 Reading festival becomes Indie based setting their mark in music festivals. In 1996 Indie label Creation conquers pop. In 2003 The Libertines play the Albion rooms and in 2006 The Arctic Monkeys make fastest selling debut ever. In 2008 The Vampire Weeknd are introduced and the world goes crazy for Indie. Other Indie bands include Arcade Fire, Two Door Cinema Club,  The Kooks, Bastille etc.

The typical lyrical content is usually about love and relationships etc. Themes are very difficult ones like problems in relationships or about the person. The musical style is very instrumental (you can hear every instrument) and voice. The ideology of a lot of Indie artists is very relaxed, but also sad in terms of lyrics. The target audience is usually teen to young adults (15-22) and are both girls and boys (predominately boys). Its quite working class music like teen angst. Its usually quite slow to upbeat depending on theme. Indie artists are usually displayed quite arty/cool and unique.
